I just received a text from a friend referring to my "last show." I've had several inquiries about it and so it's probably time that I give you the scoop...
Yep, I'm changing course and will no longer be investing in my career as a solo artist. I wouldn't change anything in the past, but I am changing directions for the future.
To be honest, I've declared retirement to close friends and myself more than Brett Favre, and every time I have returned. I love music, and I love traveling. I love creating songs and sharing them, but at the heart of all of this is a desire to understand and share life.
It's essential to all of us as human beings. We want to understand our existence and we want to express it, to share it with others. We recognize beauty and we try to mimic it. Give a child a crayon and just watch. Likewise, we experience pain or anger and we want to understand it and communicate it. It's a part of our humanity expressed even in the first cold moments after the womb: a cry.
As we get older we don't just draw and we don't just cry. We write, we discuss, we read, we sing, we dance, we work, we build, we love, we create. In every human action and endeavor we express our understanding and our existence. This is art.
When I first started music, "art" had a very limited meaning. To be "creative" meant to write a song. As I have grown, I have realized that my desire to be human, to express what I am, can extend to anything and everything. It need not be limited to music.
With that knowledge, and as I have gotten to know myself over the past few years, I have discovered new interests, new skills, and new passions that extend beyond music. I will always create music, but in order to pursue a few of my other interests I must loosen my grasp on my career as a singer/songwriter.
In the well-known account of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, they were given freedom to eat from any tree (except one). However, even within that freedom they were limited by space and time such that they could not stand under every tree at the same time.
So it is with all of us. We may reach and actually take hold of some things, but not all things at once. So I'm letting go of my music career as it has existed in the past 5 years to reach for something new. I'll blog about "something new" in the near future.
For now, I want to let everyone know that I'll still be touring solo/acoustic for 2010 and part of 2011.
My last concert with a band is scheduled for Sunday 5/16 in Nashville, TN at 7:00 PM at the Exit/Inn as a way to say thanks and to give everything I've got from stage one more time before I get too distracted by whatever comes next in my life.
As always, my desire is to enrich your life as I struggle to understand and express my own life.
